Answer engines tend to quote pages that state a direct answer in the first two or three sentences, name specific facts, and carry accurate structured data. Ranking well in classic search is still the base layer.
Write the answer first
Open each page with a short paragraph that answers the question implied by the heading. Avoid openings that delay the answer. Make the paragraph self-contained: name the entity, the number and the scope instead of using pronouns that depend on earlier text.
Add structured data that matches the page
Use JSON-LD for Organization or Person, Service, Article, FAQPage and BreadcrumbList. Only mark up what is visible on the page, and keep dates real.
Keep pages fully rendered in HTML
Content that only appears after JavaScript runs is easy for crawlers to miss. A static site generator such as Astro ships complete HTML, which removes that risk.
Technical checklist
- One H1 per page, a unique title and a unique meta description.
- A canonical URL on every page.
- A sitemap submitted in Google Search Console.
- A robots.txt that deliberately allows or blocks AI crawlers.
- Visible publish and update dates.
- Fast loading, with stable layout and compressed WebP images.
Measure it
In GA4, watch referral traffic from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and claude.ai. In Search Console, compare pages submitted with pages indexed.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a separate strategy for AI search?
No. The foundation is the same: crawlable pages, accurate titles, structured data and useful content. The difference is writing definitive, self-contained answers that are easy to quote.
What is llms.txt?
It is a plain markdown file at the root of a site that lists the most important pages with short descriptions, intended to help AI crawlers understand the site. Support varies by engine.
